Easily one of our most requested throwback classics, THE NOTEBOOK is one of the most moving love stories of the 2000's, and comes to The Frida Cinema July 21 & 22.
At a modern-day nursing home, an elderly man, Duke (James Garner), reads a romantic story from his notebook to a fellow patient Allie (Gena Rowlands). A tale of star-crossed lovers which takes place in 1940s South Carolina, the story is about a young mill worker (Ryan Gosling) and a rich girl (Rachel McAdams) who are desperately in love, despite her parents’ deep and vocal disapproval. Over the years, their lives continue to intersect and reconnect, as everything from war to the pressures of family and adulthood threaten to continue to keep them apart.
A box office smash that launched the Nicholas Sparks Film Adaptation Craze – and easily the best of the bunch – The Notebook is a veritable tear-jerker if there ever was one, and a timeless reminder that true love never dies.
Directed by Nick Cassavetes. 2004. 123 minutes. Rated PG-13.
