When a wealthy local businessman in a rural Southern town is murdered, Virgil Tibbs (Poitier), an out-of-towner, is the first suspect. However, he ends up leading the investigation after the police chief learns Tibbs is a homicide detective from Philadelphia.
Tensions rise as some of the town’s racist residents object to Tibbs taking part in the case. Will this outsider be able to overcome the racism of the rural South and find the culprit?
