Featuring a tour-de-force performance from Shia LaBeouf as tennis great John McEnroe, director Janus Metz’ kinetic sports thriller Borg Vs. McEnroe is the latest buzzed-about release from NEON, the studio that brought you Academy Award-winner I, Tonya.

Based on the dramatic true events behind one of professional tennis’ most famous rivalries, Borg vs. McEnroe chronicles the historic 1980 Wimbledon Championships, where rising American star McEnroe set his sights on dethroning reigning champion Bjorn Borg (Sverrir Gudnason, Wallander), sparking an unprecedented media frenzy. At the center of the hype were two legendary tennis icons with polar opposite personas and approaches to the game: McEnroe an infamously brash and ferocious player known for his expletive-fueled tantrums, and Borg a coolly composed and elegant athlete on and off the court.

A riveting examination of this historic clash of fire and ice, Borg vs. McEnroe is the story of two very different rivals who shared a singular commonality: the deep anxieties, and hidden inner demons, that motivated each one’s obsession with emerging victorious.

“The intense – and intensely scrutinized – rivalry between Swedish tennis great Bjorn Borg and American John McEnroe during Wimbledon in 1980 gets a terrific, energetic recreation in an historical sports drama that easily matches the ‘Battle of the Sexes.'” – Jim Schembri, 3AW

“Fascinating exposé of the behind-the-scenes psychology that drove these world-class players, and gave them the reputations they’ve carried for life.” – Sarah Watt, StuffNZ
“LaBoeuf has been enjoyably unhinged in films lately, and he chews his way greedily through McEnroe, savouring every unpredictable tic, cuss and hissy fit.” – Michael Bonner, Uncut Magazine UK

“The final match is an absolute nail-biter, reminding tennis fans how electric this sport can be.” – Anna Smith, Time Out

Dir. Janus Metz. 2017. 107 mins. A Swedish, Finnish, and Danish production. Rated R.
