After a hurricane devastates a small town in upstate New York, the lives of three women and their young children are irrevocably changed. Rin, an Iraq War veteran, tries to protect her blind daughter and the three wolves under her care. Naema, a widowed doctor who fled Iraq with her wounded son, faces life-threatening injuries. Beth, who is raising a troubled son, waits out her marine husband’s deployment in Afghanistan, equally afraid of him coming home and of him never returning at all. As they struggle to maintain their humanity and find hope, their war-torn lives collide in a way that will affect their entire community.

Helen Benedict is an award-winning journalist and professor at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism in New York City. She is the author of seven novels, five books of nonfiction, and a play. Her book The Lonely Soldier instigated a landmark lawsuit against Karl Rove and the Pentagon on behalf of victims of military sexual assault, and she was the inspiration for the Academy Award-nominated documentary The Invisible War. She has spoken at West Point, the U.S. Air Force Academy, Harvard University, TED Talks and the United Nations, among others.

Meredith Maran published her first poem in Highlights For Kids at age 6, her first national magazine article at age 15, and her first book at age 18. Since then she’s published a dozen nonfiction books, an acclaimed novel, and more articles, op-eds, essays, and book reviews than she can count for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Christian Science Monitor, The Los Angeles Review of Books, The Rumpus, Salon, and many other magazines and newspapers. A keynote speaker at venues including the California Writer’s Club, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Charles Schwab Foundation, Stanford University, and UC Berkeley, Meredith has been Writer in Residence at UCLA, the Mabel Dodge Luhan House, The Mesa Refuge, MacDowell, and Yaddo. A member of the National Book Critics Circle and a passionate proponent of independent presses, bookstores, and thought, Meredith lives in Silver Lake, Los Angeles.
