FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2018 11:59pm: CASABLANCA (35mm, Warner Brothers)
CASABLANCA? Of course, CASABLANCA! The classic 1942 romance starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman miraculously gets better and more emotionally affecting every time you see it: a phenomenon hilariously debated by the main characters in our final film of this series, WHEN HARRY MET SALLY.
Cynical Rick (Humphrey Bogart) runs a juke joint and illicit casino in Casablanca, Morocco in North Africa during the early days of World War II. Rick doesn’t stick his neck out for anything or anybody. Until the gorgeous and mysterious Ilsa Lund walks into the bar and back into his life. Transpiring across just a few days, we learn that Rick and Ilsa’s intensely passionate romance in Paris just before the Nazi invasion ended in mysterious circumstances. Now Ilsa shows up married to a freedom fighter and mysteriously begging Rick to help her and her husband secure a visa. But is there still an unresolved romance between Ilsa and Rick?
Filled with crackling direction by master Michael Curtiz, wonderful performances from Bogart, Bergman, and the wonderfully self-interested local French Police Chief, Louis Renault, played with delicious zest by Claude Rains, CASABLANCA is the perfect Valentine’s Day movie. CASABLANCA explores, with life-changing clarity, the great joys and sorrows of romantic love.
SPECIAL NOTE: We'll be showing CITY LIGHTS along with CASABLANCA and WHEN HARRY MET SALLY (all on 35mm!) in February 2018 as part of our THE GREAT ROMANCES series. For the best value, buy the THE GREAT ROMANCES SERIES PASS ($9.50 per ticket) and get into all 3 movies.
