Winter 1997. Amarillo, Texas. Cows, oil, football and land as far as the eye can see.
Brian Deneke is known for his green mohawk, dog collar, and undying passion for hardcore punk music. He pursues his dream of throwing punk shows with his friends at a rundown venue known as “Bomb City.” He also leads a widespread art movement in the otherwise uneventful town. Brian, along with many of the “punks,” refuse to conform to the conservative culture that surrounds them. Their radical appearances stir social intolerance within the community.
Cody Cates isn’t the star of his high school football team, but his white hat assimilates him well into the pack known as “white-hatters,” a group of popular, preppy kids. Cody’s clumsy demeanor often brings him ridicule, so he constantly feels the need to prove himself to his friends. After losing a football game, Cody and a few white-hatters have an altercation with several of the punks. This conflict ignites a series of hostile encounters between the groups.
The punks and white-hatters finally collide in a violent street fight. The night would soon become notorious for being one of the most controversial hate crimes in modern American culture.
