Some of the greatest masterpieces in Western art were produced during the Renaissance era where a renewed interest in ancient Greek and Roman artwork widely influenced paintings, sculpture, and architecture. This was a period of significant cultural change across western Europe, which was shifting from the medieval to the modern era. Patrons enjoyed more freedom and the role of the artist was elevated from anonymous craftsman to celebrated artist. This gallery course will explore Renaissance art produced both in Italy, where the Renaissance was born, as well as from regions north of the alps, including paintings and sculpture from modern-day Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands.
Museum educator Amber Smith gives an introductory lecture followed by a gallery tour—all before the museum opens to the public.
