An entire evening of short films by FEMALE DIRECTORS! The American Cinematheque’s 13th Annual Focus on Female Directors program celebrates the directorial work of Academy Award winners, cinema pioneers, actresses turned directors, animators, documentarians, music video directors and the brightest stars emerging from film schools and the film festival circuits.

This annual shorts program celebrates the directorial work of Academy Award winners, cinema pioneers, actresses turned directors, animators, documentarians, music video directors and the brightest stars emerging from film schools and the film festival circuits. Films include:

Robin Wright’s “The Dark of Night” (USA, 10 min.) The night turns dangerous when a woman seeks refuge from a storm in an isolated diner. Everyone has a secret and nothing is what it seems.

Svetlana Cvetko’s “Yours Sincerely, Lois Weber” (USA, 6 min.) Executive produced by Elizabeth Banks, this documentary examines the achievements of the highest-paid silent film director at Universal in 1916, Lois Weber. It is told through the fictionalized character of a young magazine photographer who hopes to impress her.

Autumn de Wilde’s “I Love L.A.” (USA, 5 min.) A fun, feisty homage to the city of dreamers, this music video for the band Starcrawler is directed by famed music photographer and visual artist Autumn de Wilde.

Laura Checkoway’s “Edith + Eddie” (USA, 29 min.) This Oscar short-list doc chronicles a family feud that threatens to tear apart America’s oldest interracial newlyweds.

Torill Kove’s “Threads” (Canada/Norway, 8 min.) In her latest animated short, Academy Award winner Torill Kove explores the beauty and complexity of parental love, the bonds that we form over time and the ways in which they stretch and shape us.

Marie Dvorakova’s “Who's Who in Mycology” (USA/Czech Republic, 16 min.) A young trombone player spends an adventurous night trying to open a bottle of wine. An unconscious girl, a crooked bookcase and rapidly growing mold get in his way.

Eva Cvijanović’s “Hedgehog’s Home” (Croatia/Canada, 10 min.) Based on the story by Branko Ćopić, this animated short tells the tale of a hedgehog living in a lush and lively forest.

Rippin Sindher’s “The Hideout” (USA, 9 min.) Sammy Kaur wishes life was like a Bollywood movie. When an unexpected rent notice shakes up her mundane world, she is forced to make a life-changing decision.

Series compiled by Andrew P. Crane, Kim Adelman and Andrea Richards.

Discussion following the screening with filmmakers Svetlana Cvetko, Autumn de Wilde, Rippin Sindher and others. There will be a drawing for a director’s empowerment bag.
