Discussion with Drs. David Freidel and Michelle Rich
Join David Freidel, archaeologist, co-author of the seminal book A Forest of Kings, and original co-director of the El Perú-Waka’ Regional Archaeological Project, and Michelle Rich, archaeologist and curator of the current exhibition at LACMA called «Ancient Bodies: Archaeological Perspectives on Mesoamerican Figurines,» as they discuss the ancient Maya resurrection scene excavated at the Classic period Maya site of El Perú-Waka', Guatemala. Featured in Ancient Bodies, the Waka' scene has changed the way Maya specialists perceive Classic period figurines. Freidel and Rich will recount the archaeological discovery of the 23 ceramic figurines in an ancient ruler's tomb, excavated by Rich. They will also examine the process of coordinating the restoration of the figurines, and the broader implications of the exhibition across the globe of these cultural and artistic treasures.
