“Geography is mostly about how we strive to feel at home on Earth, rooted in place; yet … we never quite succeed.”
— Yi-Fu Tuan, from Place, Art, and Self (2004)

The seven artists featured in this exhibition are in varied ways exploring the more beguiling aspects of our relationship to landscape. We often look to physical places as a way of grounding our own place in the world. We keep snapshots of the places we’ve been and use them to recall and share our stories; we build monuments to ensure certain stories survive; and we journey to these historical sites to commune with the past. It is tempting to imagine that this connection to both personal and cultural histories is as fixed and concrete as our tactile physical experience, but direct access is always thwarted. Our connection is fragmented and mediated. The ground is always shifting. Even returning to familiar places, the earth beneath our feet is never quite the same. Acceptance of this fraught process, however, does little to assuage the enduring desire to be securely placed. The longing persists, and we continue to wrestle with the implications of rooting our stories in a shifting landscape.

The exhibition will be on view August 28 — September 22, 2017.
