Every second Monday and Tuesday of the month is Anime at The Frida!, and this month we’re giving you director Satoshi Kon’s award-winning 2003 hit, Tokyo Godfathers!
Middle-aged alcoholic Gin, teenage runaway Miyuki, and former drag queen Hana are a trio of homeless people surviving as an unlikely makeshift family on the streets of Tokyo. While rummaging in the trash for food on Christmas Eve, they stumble upon an abandoned newborn baby in a trash bin. With only a handful of clues to the baby’s identity, the three misfits search the streets of Tokyo for help in returning the baby to its parents.
Winner of multiple Best Animated Feature Film awards, including Sitges-Catalonian International Film Festival and Tokyo Anime Awards, Tokyo Godfathers is loosely based on Peter B. Kyne’s novel “Three Godfathers,” and will be presented in its original Japanese language with English subtitles.
