LORENZO HURTADO SEGOVIA
«VIDA, PASIÓN Y MUERTE»

SEPTEMBER 9 – OCTOBER 21, 2017
RECEPTION FOR THE ARTIST: Saturday, September 9, 4 – 7 p.m.

In conjunction with the Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA Participating Gallery Program, CB1 Gallery is pleased to present «Vida, pasión y muerte» by Lorenzo Hurtado Segovia. Known for his Papel tejido (woven paper) works, the exhibition marks a turn toward figuration and drawing. This exhibition introduces Hurtado Segovia's sculptural work with an emphasis on traditional woodworking techniques, continuing his explorations of pattern and textile influences.

Hurtado Segovia’s art is rooted in craft traditions with themes of art history, personal anecdotes, Christian theology, and ethnographic motifs. Although founded in painting, his work incorporates various materials and techniques including beads, paper, embroidery, weaving, and carpentry. The resulting aesthetic is an intricate and multilayered synthesis of figuration, abstraction, and decoration. Hurtado Segovia brings spiritual themes into the contemporary art world as a relevant subject of discourse. He attempts to redefine Christian themes and open up a conversation that is reinvigorated by points of view that depart from conservative dogma. The work is inspired by the myriad ways beliefs are represented through ritual and artifact.

«Vida, pasión, y muerte» is Hurtado Segovia’s fifth solo exhibition at CB1 Gallery. It introduces new sculptural work with an emphasis on traditional woodworking techniques. In addition, Hurtado Segovia continues his use of pattern and textile influences, while exploring new materials such as tar sourced from the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, sand from the Pacific coast, and trees felled in the city. The show’s title turns a fatalist biological fact optimistic by including passion between bookends inviting us to live fully, filled with hope.

Born in Cd. Júarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, Lorenzo Hurtado Segovia graduated with a BA from UCLA in 2003 and an MFA from Otis College of Art and Design in 2007. In 2015 the Vincent Price Art Museum organized his first solo museum exhibition, a survey of work from 2007 to 2014, Mis Papeles. Additionally his work has been featured in Paperworks at the Craft and Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles, Fiberlicious at the LA Municipal Art Gallery in the SUR Biennial and Material Cultures at BRIC (Brooklyn, NY). His work is in the collection of The Hammer Museum as well as many corporate and private collections. He lives with his wife and two children in Los Angeles where he also maintains his studio. Hurtado Segovia is Assistant Professor of Illustration at Otis College of Art and Design.

The exhibition is an official Participating Gallery Exhibition of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, the Getty-led exploration of Latin American and Latino art.
