The Theatre at Ace Hotel DTLA
929 S Broadway, Los Angeles, California 90015
Experience the joy of film with live orchestral music as LACO screens Buster Keaton’s The General. Emmy® Award-winning conductor and composer Jeff Beal provides a brand new score for a multi-sensory experience like no other. The event takes place at The Theatre at Ace Hotel, a gorgeously restored 1927 Spanish Gothic movie palace at the heart of downtown’s revitalized Broadway Theatre district.
Nearly 50 years ago, LACO was founded by Hollywood’s best studio musicians, who longed for an artistic home where they could engage with the classical canon. To this day, many LACO musicians make a living in the studios of Southern California, recording hundreds of scores for television and the movies. A distinctive film with live orchestra event focusing on classic silent film, LACO @ the Movies pays homage to the Orchestra’s beginnings and celebrates the versatility of the Orchestra’s talented musicians.
Jeff Beal — conducter and composer
Jeff Beal is an American composer of music for film, media, and the concert hall. Steven Schneider for the New York Times wrote of “the richness of Beal’s musical thinking…his compositions often capture the liveliness and unpredictability of the best improvisation.”
Beal’s eclectic music has been singled out with critical acclaim and recognition. His score and theme for Netflix drama, House of Cards, has received five prime time Emmy Award nominations & one statue. Regarding his compelling score for the documentary, Blackfish, the late film critic Roger Ebert wrote of Beal’s ability to “invoke many genres; thriller, mystery, melodrama.” Another lauded documentary, The Queen of Versailles, opened the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.
