On Friday, September 22, Hotflush Recordings takes over Lot 613 to showcase three of its label’s most musically diverse artists. Hotflush label founder and veteran DJ, Paul Rose, aka Scuba, has been at the forefront of the scene for over a decade. Originally hailing from the UK before moving to Berlin. Rose has been a steady source of constantly evolving and excitingly phantom music which he purveys not only in his own musical offerings- but in his masterfully curated label-troupe as well. Spearheaded by Scuba himself in 2003, Hotflush Recordings’ early influences were deeply rooted in the UK bass music scene, but its musical paradigm has since transgressed into a more techno infused label with formative releases from Paul Woolford, Dense & Pika, and Recondite. Hotflush Recordings’ eclectic representation of genres is largely a reflection of Scuba’s own enigmatic style of music, which has invigorating hints of bass, techno, and more introspective melodies, as is so beautifully exemplified in his poignant, memoir-like LP, Claustrophobia.
Joining the label boss at Prototype is Sepalcure, made up of the mastermind collaboration between Travis Stewart, under his alias ‘Machinedrum’, and Praveen ‘Praveen & Benoit’ Sharma. Having been six years since the explorative duo first linked to create their debut self-titled album, Sepalcure, the pair has continued to perfect and transform their signature two-step and breakbeat sound in each ensuing EP- all of which are chronicled through releases on Hotflush Recordings. Most recently, the duo’s long awaited album, Folding Time, emotively mirrors their musical journey and progression together as artists. When you listen through Sepalcure, you simultaneously take a trip through their own personal, reminiscent time machine.
On opening duties is California, turned Berlin local Lando, aka Antaeus Lando Roy. A truly multifaceted DJ, his tracks carry traces of techno, house, acid, all through a distinctive lens that seamlessly ties in sexy basslines with all out funk. Landos mastery of his art has landed him bookings at Berghain, Fabric, Space, Trouw, and a residency at the seminal nightclub, Tresor.
