Have you ever wondered why your spacious circle skirt has no pockets? Have you delighted in stashing your indispensables inside the pockets of your favorite dress? If so, this beginner-level sewing class is for you.
Participants will be introduced to the hidden history of the pocket, from its beginnings as a separate garment worn under various ensembles to a decorative element of little practical use. We will learn why fashion so often denies women pockets, examine the anatomy of different pocket styles, and practice pocket construction. The workshop will culminate in the opportunity to add pockets to an existing pocketless garment from your closet. (you know the one…)
Michaela Hansen graduated from Rhode Island School of Design and holds a Master's from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she studied fashion design and history with a focus on artistic dress and dress reform. She has been a Curatorial Assistant in the Costume and Textiles department at LACMA since 2013, and currently lives in Silver Lake with her pug, Eloise, who is an excellent pattern weight.
