Join KPCC In Person on Saturday, Aug. 26, as Larry Mantle hosts a 20th anniversary screening of Quentin Tarantino’s “Jackie Brown” at the Theatre at Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. A conversation with FilmWeek critics Tim Cogshell and Wade Major will follow.
— “’Jackie Brown’ is a moving character study that features a soulful score evoking Blaxploitation films of the ‘70s. Grier starred in several high-profile films of the genre. Tarantino’s affection is clear for Grier’s portrayals of characters who overcome difficult circumstances.
Though critics were divided on 'Jackie Brown,' it’s one of my absolute favorites. As a fan of the movie’s stars, the South Bay locations, and the movie’s soundtrack, it’s a trifecta for me.”
– Larry Mantle
— The FilmWeek Screenings series – selected and hosted by Mantle – is dedicated to movies set in Southern California. The upcoming installment, “Jackie Brown,” features some rarely depicted locations like Carson, Hawthorne and the Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance. FilmWeek is AirTalk’s weekly segment devoted to movies and the film industry.
In the film, Jackie (Pam Grier) is a flight attendant for a marginal airline flying from Los Angeles to Mexico. Her business relationship with shady Ordell (Samuel L. Jackson) brings her into the lives of bail bondsman Max (Robert Forster) and federal investigator Ray (Michael Keaton).
