Wend your way through lovely El Dorado Park, then finish the morning with a pancake breakfast, at the same time raising money for field trips, musical instruments and sports teams for a Long Beach school — what better way to spend a beautiful autumn day?
Run Like It's Recess is an 5K, 1K and toddler run to fund programs at Newcomb Academy, a public K-8 school in Long Beach. The race celebrates its eighth running on Sunday, Nov. 12, and isn't just for students — previous participants have ranged in age from 84 to younger than 1.
Organizers describe it as the perfect course for anyone seeking a personal record, or just wanting a scenic trip through the park. Families, and teams of friends are encouraged to race together. And for the most fleet of foot, the top three finishers in each gender and age group will receive medals.
Individual entry fees are $30 for the 5K, $15 for the 1K and $10 for the toddler run, and anyone registering before Oct. 28 is guaranteed a t-shirt. All proceeds go to kids' field trips, teacher supplies, 5th and 8th-grade graduation ceremonies, art classes and other needs not met by district funds.
The 1K and toddler race finish at a giant inflatable slide, and all entrants 10 and younger get participation medals. Finally, runners and spectators alike can hash over the morning at the free on-site pancake breakfast.
The 5K begins at 9 a.m., while the other races follow thereafter. Full details are at runlikeitsrecess.com.
